Thai army moves into Ratchaprasong via Ploenchit Road - Bangkok, 19 May 2010


It's quiet almost all the way down the rest of Sukhumvit Road and there are more checkpoints as the camp gets closer, this time army controlled, around Nana, and then tucked under the Chalerm Maha Nakhon Expressway's intersection, just before Ploen Chit BTS Station, where vehicles cannot pass along any further. Under the BTS station here troops are getting ready to move in as army firefighters douse the first barricade which spans Ploen Chit Road at the intersection of Wireless Road. Soon thick clouds of smoke is replaced by billowing clouds of steam and a phalanx of municipal workers clad in day-glo green T-shirts start scraping up the burnt tyres with a JCB' shovel and untangle the mass of bamboo poles and stack them neatly on a gaggle of yellow trucks lined up under the station. More workers use large bolt croppers to chop up the scattered razor wire into smaller, manageable chunks. At the same time bomb disposal troops in bulbous blast-resistant suits search the bushes, rubbish bins and undergrowth growth in the vicinity for booby traps. At this point the army was preparing to send in a company of soldiers to secure Ploen Chit Road towards Ratchaprasong as reports continued to filter through that the Reds had fallen well back. The first company, around 25 strong, moved beyond round the crumbled outer barricade, splashing through pools of water, and onto the deserted Ploen Chit Road.
